12 Years of La Plantation: Everything You Need to Know About Our Sustainable Journey
For the past 12 years, La Plantation has established itself as a leading name in Kampot Pepper and a model for sustainable development. Agriculture, fair trade, responsible tourism… Here are 12 frequently asked questions about this exceptional adventure.
HOW DID THE IDEA FOR LA PLANTATION BEGIN?
A PASSIONATE DISCOVERY IN CAMBODIA
In 2013, during a trip to Cambodia, we discovered Kampot Pepper and its unique terroir. Once considered one of the finest peppers in the world, this spice had almost disappeared due to decades of conflict. Fascinated by its history and potential, we quickly became determined to take part in its revival.
THE VISION OF A SUSTAINABLE PROJECT
We didn’t just want to create a farm—we wanted to build a true model of sustainable development. Our goal was to combine high-quality agricultural production with a positive social and environmental impact. We embraced traditional methods, promoted local employment, and developed a fair trade supply chain.
WHY IS KAMPOT PEPPER SO RENOWNED?
A UNIQUE TERROIR FOR A RARE SPICE
Kampot Pepper grows in an exceptional environment: quartz-rich soil, a humid tropical climate, and a balanced alternation of dry and rainy seasons. These conditions give Kampot Pepper its complex and intense aromas.
A PROTECTED GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION (PGI)
In 2010, Kampot Pepper was awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, ensuring that traditional production methods are followed. Today, top chefs worldwide use Kampot Pepper in their signature dishes.
WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MAJOR MILESTONES OF THE PROJECT?
RESTORING THE LAND AND REBUILDING THE ECOSYSTEM
When we arrived, the land was abandoned and overgrown. We had to restore the soil, replant the pepper vines, and recreate a healthy ecosystem to support sustainable farming.
DEVELOPING TOURISM AND EDUCATION
In 2016, we opened our farm to visitors, allowing people to learn about Kampot Pepper and its terroir. Today, La Plantation is a must-visit destination for those interested in responsible tourism.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES?
LEARNING FROM EXPERIENCE
Coming from completely different backgrounds, we had to immerse ourselves in Cambodian culture and learn local farming techniques from scratch.
CLIMATE AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES
Climate change has occasionally threatened our harvests. Additionally, the 2020 pandemic forced us to pivot towards online sales, as tourism came to a standstill.
