Our Dried Fruits and Cashews
CAMBODIA: A RENOWNED PRODUCER OF HIGH-QUALITY FRUITS
Cambodia is a well-recognised producer of tropical fruits, including mangoes, pineapples, and cashew nuts. Agriculture plays a key role in the Cambodian economy, and fruit production is an integral part of this sector.
- Mangoes: Cambodia is one of the largest mango producers in Southeast Asia. Cambodian mangoes are highly valued for their sweet flavour and quality. They are consumed locally and exported to international markets, including China, South Korea, and Thailand.
- Pineapples: While Cambodia may not be the largest pineapple producer in the region, it still cultivates a significant amount. Pineapples are primarily grown in the southern regions of the country, where the climate is favourable for their growth.
- Cashew Nuts: Cashew nuts are another important crop for Cambodia. In recent years, the country has seen an increase in cashew production, with growing demand both locally and for export. Cambodia exports a significant portion of its cashew nuts, primarily to Vietnam and India, where they are often processed before being re-exported.
CAMBODIA’S REPUTATION FOR HIGH-QUALITY MANGOES
We have selected the finest mangoes from the Battambang region, located in north-western Cambodia.
The Keo Romeat mango variety is the most famous in Battambang and is considered one of the best in Cambodia. The Keo Romeat mango is known for its firm, sweet, and fragrant flesh. Its skin remains green even when ripe, which can be misleading for those unfamiliar with this variety. It is generally consumed fresh but can also be used in desserts or processed into products like dried mangoes.
The fruits are harvested at full maturity, sliced, and dehydrated on the day of harvest. They are then spiced with Red Pepper to balance the sweet notes of the mango. These are perfect as a snack or for cooking in desserts or sweet and savoury dishes.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CAMBODIAN DRIED PINEAPPLE
We have selected pineapples from Kampong Speu, which are particularly prized for their sweet flavour and juiciness. This province is one of the main pineapple producers in the country.
Kampong Speu benefits from climate and soil conditions ideal for growing this fruit, making it an optimal region for pineapple production. In addition to pineapples, Kampong Speu is also known for palm sugar production, but pineapples remain a key crop of this province.
Kampong Speu pineapples are consumed locally and are also sold in markets across other regions of Cambodia. This variety is distinguished by its small size and compact shape. They have bright yellow flesh, very sweet and juicy, with a well-balanced acidity. The thin outer skin makes the fruit easier to peel. Pineapples are harvested at full maturity, allowing them to develop their natural sweetness and unique tropical flavour. After dehydration, the fruits are spiced with Red Pepper, striking a perfect balance between sweet and spicy, for an invigorating snack at any time of the day.
CAMBODIA IS THE WORLD’S SECOND LARGEST PRODUCER OF CASHEW NUTS
To highlight the Cambodian cashew industry, we prioritise sourcing our cashew nuts from family farm cooperatives in the Kampong Thom region of Cambodia. The cashew variety cultivated here is highly prized for its creamy texture and unique taste. We roast these shelled nuts and coat them with our spice blends. Cashew nuts are packed with health benefits, making them an essential nutritional element. For a deliciously addictive snack, explore our full range of cashew nuts, including smoked cashews and other varieties, available in our online shop.
DRIED FRUITS SUPPORT SHORT SUPPLY CHAINS AND PREVENT FOOD WASTE
Mangoes intended for export are often harvested green, then ripened in storage before being sold to consumers on the other side of the world.
With our range of dried fruits, we enable Cambodian family farms to add value to their ripe fruit production that is no longer exportable. Allowing the fruit to ripen on the tree is the best way to preserve its full taste and benefits. This approach enhances the work of producers who are compensated at their fair value. The Plantation adds a spicy and peppery touch for the delight of its customers. The process is the same for pineapples: through local purchases of ripe fruits, the producer is better compensated, and the consumer has access to a dried fruit that tastes just like the ripe fruit enjoyed on-site.
Transporting dried fruit is also better for the planet, as the weight after peeling and dehydration is much lower than that of fresh fruit, which often has to travel by air.
CASHEW PRODUCTION IN CAMBODIA
Cashew production in Cambodia is widespread in the Kampong Thom province, where climate conditions and soils are favourable for their cultivation. Cambodian cashews are renowned for their quality, with well-formed kernels and a high oil content, making them particularly delicious.
Until recently, 95% of the cashews grown in Cambodia were exported to Vietnam and re-sold under Vietnamese provenance. By supporting the Cambodian cashew industry, we are backing the entire value chain, enabling family farms to be fairly compensated for their cashews.
Our dried fruits offer a unique fusion of flavours, delivering an exceptional taste experience that combines the natural sweetness of the fruits with the subtle spiciness of our world-renowned Kampot Pepper. For an exquisite and characterful tasting experience, our dried Mangoes and Pineapples can be enjoyed on their own, paired with a charcuterie board, or even added to slow-cooked dishes. A delicious, ready-to-eat snack that delights the whole family and is kind to the environment!
