Our guide to travelling with spices
Traveling is an adventure in itself, and what better way to enjoy your holiday than by bringing a little bit of home with you? Taking your spices on vacation can transform a simple meal and offers the opportunity to introduce your favorite spices to your loved ones, allowing you to savor our Cambodian flavors wherever you are! Here is our guide to help you pack your favorite spices for your travels.
Our tips for storing spices when travelling
To keep your spices fresh and flavorful, it is essential to protect them from moisture and heat during transport. Here are some tips:
- Use airtight containers: Small airtight jars or resealable bags are ideal for preserving your spices. You can transport our tube formats or transfer larger quantities into small jars for travel.
- Avoid temperature changes: Keep your spices out of direct sunlight and preferably in a cool place. Our small kraft pots are ideal for protection, but be cautious of light exposure if you use glass jars!
- Appropriate quantity: Take just enough for your stay. Whether it’s for a day picnic or a two-week vacation, prepare the necessary amount to avoid overloading your bags and to preserve the freshness of the spices!
Why take your spices with you when you travel?
Bringing your own spices allows you to maintain your culinary habits even while traveling. It also gives you the opportunity to experiment in the kitchen, share unique aromas with your loved ones, or even bring along the spices you use less frequently during the rest of the year.
By having your own spices, you can:
- Adapt to specific diets: Use your spices to prepare gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan dishes.
- Avoid surprises: Sometimes local spices are unavailable or don’t suit your preferences, even though it is always recommended to prioritize spices from a short supply chain. Be wary of supermarket spices that are part of a long supply chain, especially pre-ground pepper found on many restaurant tables! Our founders Nathalie and Guy always advise carrying a mill filled with Kampot Pepper to enjoy its peppery aromas at any moment!
- Save money: No need to buy new spices on site.
- Personalize: Adjust flavors to your liking.
- Comfort: Have your favorite spices at hand.
- Share: Introduce new tastes and combinations to the whole family!
Can you replace one spice with another?
If you want to adapt a local dish with our spices, no problem. It is often possible to substitute one spice for another, depending on the recipe and your preferences. Remember that cooking is a personal matter, and you should not hesitate to experiment in the kitchen!
