Spices and benefits according to Hildegarde de Bingen: Natural remedies from the past to the present

In our quest to find the finest spices in Cambodia, we’ve come to realise that spices do more than simply add flavour to dishes; they may also bring potential health benefits to your everyday life. Tradition and ancient knowledge remind us that plants and spices have long been used as natural remedies, both in Cambodia and in medieval Europe. Today, we explore the potential benefits of spices.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSUME SPICES?

Spices have played a central role in the culinary and medicinal practices of many cultures throughout history. Khmer traditions are rich with knowledge about the medicinal use of spices. This echoes the teachings of Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th-century German Benedictine abbess and early naturalist, who highlighted the healing properties of spices in medieval Europe. Despite developing in different times and cultural contexts, both traditions share a similar approach: using spices to maintain balance in both body and mind.

WHO WAS HILDEGARD OF BINGEN AND WHAT WAS HER CONNECTION TO SPICES?

Hildegard of Bingen was a true pioneer of medieval natural medicine. She firmly believed in the therapeutic properties of spices. In her renowned work Physica, Hildegard documented the medicinal uses of various plants, some of which she recommended as remedies. Her writings have stood the test of time and her holistic approach to health is widely recognised today. This knowledge aligns with traditional Khmer practices, highlighting the shared wisdom of spice usage across cultures.

KEY SPICES AND THEIR POTENTIAL HEALTH BENEFITS

Ginger

Ginger has long been prized for its potential health benefits. Hildegard viewed ginger as a natural stimulant, helpful for combating fatigue and boosting circulation. In traditional Asian medicine, ginger is also used to relieve headaches, nausea, and digestive issues.

Turmeric

Hildegard also praised turmeric, a vibrant spice that we carefully cultivate at La Plantation. She believed it could purify the body and boost natural defences. Today, turmeric is renowned for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is often considered a superfood. It plays a significant role in Ayurvedic medicine and is deeply embedded in Cambodian culinary traditions.

Black pepper

As one of Cambodia’s most iconic spices, black pepper from Kampot or Mondulkiri has held a prominent place in traditional Khmer medicine. It is considered a digestive aid and may help with stomach discomfort and improving circulation.

Interestingly, Hildegard of Bingen also praised black pepper in her writings, noting its ability to warm the body and stimulate digestion. Both Khmer and medieval European cultures valued black pepper for its warming properties and potential digestive benefits.

Cardamom

Native to the Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia, cardamom is widely used in traditional Khmer medicine for its digestive properties. Consumed in teas or decoctions, it is believed to soothe bloating and aid digestion, while also stimulating the appetite.

Hildegard similarly acknowledged cardamom for its warming and digestive benefits. Across both traditions, cardamom is used to support digestive health and revitalise the body.

Cinnamon

Hildegard recommended cinnamon to improve digestion and ease gastric discomfort. She also believed it could boost metabolism and bring internal warmth. In traditional Khmer medicine, cinnamon is used for its warming properties, particularly during colds or chills.
