Victim of its success
Red long pepper, in its ready-to-use
powder form
Red long pepper (Piper retrofactum) is a rare spice originally from Java, Indonesia, which has perfectly adapted to the fertile terroir of Kampot, Cambodia.
This flowering vine produces elongated pepper spikes, harvested when fully ripe and deep red.
How is red long pepper harvested?
Harvesting is done by hand, with selective picking to ensure only fully ripe fruits are chosen. After collection, the spikes are washed, briefly blanched, and sun-dried for several days to preserve their natural aromas.
Unlike salt-fermented long pepper, red long pepper powder is collected at a later stage of maturity, offering a rounder, warmer and more aromatic flavour. It is a truly artisanal ground pepper, appreciated for its authenticity and intensity.
At La Plantation, dried red long pepper is finely ground and packed immediately into airtight sachets, preserving its full flavour profile and the pepper’s organoleptic qualities.
Did you know? Red long pepper comes from the same vine as fresh green long pepper used for salted long pepper, but it is harvested when fully ripe. |
Why do we offer red long pepper in powder form? Whole long pepper is valued for its aromas but can be difficult to use: it needs to be grated, crushed, or placed in a mill. The powdered version makes it convenient and ready-to-use — simply sprinkle over your dishes.
