La chandeleur (Candlemas): Tradition and delicacies

Chandeleur (Candlemas), celebrated on 2 February, was originally a religious festival. Over the centuries, however, it has become synonymous with conviviality, sharing and, of course, indulgence. The French get together as a family to make and eat pancakes, symbols of prosperity, and more specifically to have fun blowing them up while holding a gold coin, supposed to bring luck and fortune for the coming year.

Chandeleur is not just a time for making crêpes, it’s also a time for getting together, bonding and sharing joy around the table. Although the basic recipe for crêpes is simple, each family has its own secrets, preferences and favourite toppings. It’s a tribute to our beautiful regions of France, like Brittany, famous for their crêpes: thick or thin, but always well buttered!

One exquisite example comes from our region of Cambodia, where ‘num banh chok’ is a delicacy of choice.
