Using curry powder instead of curry paste can be considered more environmentally friendly for several reasons:
- Reduced weight and volume: Curry powders generally have less weight and volume per portion compared to curry pastes. This means that the transportation and packaging of curry powders often generate a lower carbon footprint.
- Longer shelf life: Curry powders tend to have a longer shelf life than curry pastes. This reduces food waste, as the products have greater stability and can be stored for longer without losing their flavour.
- Precise dosage: Curry powders allow for more precise dosing compared to curry pastes. This means you use only the amount needed for a particular recipe, reducing the risk of waste.
Flexibility in cooking: Curry powders offer greater flexibility in cooking, as they can be incorporated at different stages of the cooking process, allowing for finer control of flavours. While versatile, curry pastes can be more limited in certain recipes.
Lighter packaging: Curry powder blends are often packaged in lighter packaging, requiring less plastic. Curry pastes may sometimes be sold in heavier containers, necessitating more packaging materials.
However, it is important to note that the question of carbon footprint and environmental impact also depends on factors such as the origin of the ingredients, the agricultural methods used, and the manufacturing practices. Using local and sustainable products, as well as generally reducing packaging, are also important considerations for an eco-friendly approach to cooking.
To maintain the optimal flavour of your Yellow Curry, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Exposure to heat and moisture can compromise the quality and taste of the spice blend. Ensure to keep Yellow Curry away from strong-smelling products, as spices can absorb these odours, altering their original flavour.
You may keep the curry in its original packaging, making sure to reseal the bag or container tightly after each use. An airtight container is essential to preserve the freshness of the spices. Protect your Yellow Curry from humidity, which can cause clumping. For this reason, we have included a small silica gel packet to absorb any excess moisture.
The Asian Roots of Curry
Curry traces its origins back to Asia, where it was developed thousands of years ago. The earliest evidence of spice blends resembling curry can be found in ancient times, particularly within Indian cuisine. In India, the term “curry” derives from the Tamil word “kari,” meaning sauce. These spice blends were used to flavour dishes and were tailored to local tastes. Key spices include turmeric, coriander, cumin, cardamom, and many others.
Curry’s journey to Europe
During the period of exploration and trade between Europe and Asia, spices, including those used in curry, were introduced to Europe. Curry underwent adaptations to suit local preferences, leading to the emergence of European curry variations. British influence in India played a significant role in popularising curry as a signature dish. The British adopted curry as an integral part of their cuisine, making Indian curry popular in Great Britain.
Curry’s Global variations
Today, the term “curry” encompasses a wide variety of dishes with diverse flavours and styles, ranging from Indian curry to Thai curry, and including Japanese curry, among many others. The history of curry is a story of cultural fusion, culinary discovery, and constant adaptation over the centuries.
